Dear Prof: I need two weeks off

Sounds sort of like an April Fool joke but no, this is true. I got an email the other day, not asking, but TELLING me that the student was going to take off two weeks while traveling and would hand in all the work and do all the discussions when she got back home.

Seriously? Yes this was for real.

I told her to please read the official university syllabus and the late policy for the course. Discussions cannot be made up and all work was subject to the late policy. Further, I also copied the official statement from the university that travel and vacations are not considered reasons for due date extensions. Then I explained that the university expected students to be able to access online courses in the event they were away from home or they lost connectivity while at home.

The response from the student was: Oh and I am not feeling well so I still need an extension.

Seriously? Nope, not an April Fool joke. I wrote back: I'm sorry, no can do. Work is due on time as usual.

Sometimes I wonder if people have any good sense at all. What's your craziest request for taking late work?

  1. OMG! The other day a student informed me she would be late submitting her exam because her kid broke her computer's electrical cord.

The modern version of 'the dog ate my homework'?

    1. Wonder if they forgot the part of the policy that says always have a back up plan. Good to hear from you -- been keeping up with your travels.
